All-rounder Venkatesh Iyer's disappointing performance in the 2025 IPL season has forced Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to take a big decision ahead of the 2026 edition. Having been bought for Rs 23.75 crore, the franchise and fans had high expectations from the all-rounder who had played a key role in KKR's previous campaigns. However, their performance failed to justify the investment.
Despite being seen as a potential leader and vice-captain, Iyer struggled to find form with the bat, scoring only 142 runs in 11 matches at an average of 20.29 and a strike rate of 139.22. Furthermore, he was not used as a bowler, reducing his value as a multidimensional player. Their decline in form coincided with KKR's disappointing season, where the defending champions finished eighth.
By releasing Iyer, KKR can free up around Rs 24 crore, giving them the option to sign two or three impact players during the 2026 auction. However, the franchise can still try to re-acquire him at a lower price in the mini-auction.
Here are 3 possible replacements KKR must consider for Venkatesh Iyer
3. Harshal Patel

Kolkata Knight Riders may consider experienced fast bowler Harshal Patel For the upcoming season. Despite inconsistent performances with Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2025, where he took 16 wickets in 13 matches at an economy of 9.80, Harshal's versatility and talent in the death overs makes him a valuable addition. It is noteworthy that the 34-year-old player had earlier won the Purple Cap in IPL 2021 and 2024 for Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab Kings by taking 32 and 24 wickets respectively.
KKR may target Harshal to strengthen their death bowling, an area where they struggled in IPL 2025. His experience in 119 IPL matches and track record of 151 wickets makes him a reliable option. Recently Harshal has also returned to Gujarat with Haryana after 14 years. If released by SRH, KKR's interest in the experienced fast bowler could prove to be a smart move ahead of IPL 2026.
