RCB are the defending champions from 2025, having won their maiden IPL title with a six-run win over Punjab Kings in the final in Ahmedabad.
The legendary spinner, who represented Royal Challengers Bangalore from 2008-2010, believes that it is going to be difficult for the team to make a consistent comeback. However, he praised captain Patidar for how well he performed in his first season as captain.
“It will not be easy for Rajat Patidar's RCB to win consecutive titles. Only CSK and MI have been successful in winning consecutive trophies before. But I think Rajat Patidar has done well in his first season as captain,” he said on JioHotstar.
Patidar takes over from the departing Faf du Plessis for the 2025 season. This was Patidar's first big responsibility after captaining Madhya Pradesh in the domestic circuit. Kumble explained how it was expected that Virat Kohli, who is stepping down from the captaincy at the end of the 2021 season, would take over the reins. He praised the RCB staff for recognizing Patidar's skills and giving him the responsibility of captaincy.
Kumble said, “When he was announced as the captain, many of us were surprised because everyone expected Virat to take charge again. But the team management decided to go with Patidar and it paid off. He only had the experience of captaining Madhya Pradesh and had done well in domestic cricket. He had an identity as a captain and with the experience he had, he led really well. Now it will be challenging because the expectations will be higher. But he is very cool and calm under pressure.” That's their USP.”
RCB will begin their title defense against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 28 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
