Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan has spoken strongly about the involvement of franchise owners in the performance of teams on the pitch and other criticisms related to it. Lucknow Super Giants Owner Sanjeev Goenka.
After Lucknow Super Giants lost to Delhi Capitals, a video showed Goenka having an animated discussion with captain Rishabh Pant, which brought back memories of his infamous altercation with KL Rahul in 2024.
Vaughn said he hates it when such conversations become public, even if they are positive, because matters within the leadership group should be kept private. Vaughan believes that if this continues, Lucknow may soon lose its momentum.
“I am interested in this franchise, I have to admit. I watch from quite a distance, and I keep seeing things on social media, and I see the owner on the pitch with Rishabh, with Tom Moody, with Justin Langer. I hate to see that. I hate to see that after a game on the pitch. You can have those conversations in private,” Vaughan told Cricbuzz.
And even if they were good conversations, I don't understand them because what you're doing is leading people to suggest that other things have been said in that group that probably aren't. It might have just been a fun conversation, who knows? But yes, they are an interesting franchise. But I think the wheels of Lucknow may come loose very quickly,” he said.
Following backlash on social media, LSG posted an “unfiltered” video of the discussion, but it did not have the desired effect, with fans claiming it was “re-recorded”.
Rishabh Pant The Delhi captain made headlines by opting to open the batting against Delhi Capitals, to counter the threat of left-arm spin from Axar Patel. It was a poor performance for Pant, as he unfortunately got out after scoring seven runs.
Speaking after the game, he did not give any clarity on the continuation of this role. Vaughan believes that LSG and Pant should stick to their decision for at least five or six matches.
He said, “Quotes are often taken out of context, but if there is even a hint of confusion in the group, clarity is important. If the decision is to have Rishabh play this role with Mitch, it should be supported for five or six matches.”
Lucknow Super Giants will face Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 5 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
