Punjab Kings opener Prabhsimran Singh has strongly supported the IPL's Impact Player rule, calling it a game-changer for young cricketers. The 25-year-old also revealed that he models his wicket-keeping on the lines of MS Dhoni and highlighted the influence of the great keeper-batsman on his game.
In the current IPL season, Prabhasimran has scored 80 runs in two innings for PBKS. The franchise retained him ahead of the mini-auction considering his stellar performance in IPL 2025, where he scored 549 runs in 17 innings.
“As a young player, I see the Impact Sub rule as a great opportunity for young players, and I have said this many times. Many people don't like it because, obviously, a team can take more risky decisions when a player, be it a batsman or a bowler,” Prabhasimran was quoted as saying by India Today.
“But for the young players, it is invaluable. When I joined the (PBKS) franchise, I spent eight years with them, and in four of those years, I didn't get much opportunities to play. Sitting on the sidelines, I was always hoping for a shot, and now, because of the Impact Sub rule, I think the opportunities for the youngsters have increased significantly,” he said.
The impact player rule in the IPL has sparked debate among experts, with many arguing that it tilts the balance in favor of batsmen while reducing the importance of all-rounders. However, Prabhasimran sees it differently, describing it as a valuable platform that allows marginal players to showcase their talents and take advantage of opportunities that were previously limited.
With India having several top-order wicketkeeper-batsmen like KL Rahul, Sanju Samson, Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan, the competition for places remains intense. Despite this, Prabhasimran stressed that he preferred to stay true to his natural batting style rather than copy others. Also, he continues to hone his wicketkeeping skills by watching Dhoni closely and learning from him.
“You can't say I try to copy anyone… They are all my seniors, and each has his own style of playing, while I have my own. Now when I am also keeping, I have seen Mahi bhai picking up so much pace. I don't try to copy anyone in batting, but when it comes to keeping, I consciously try to be like Mahi bhai,” Prabhasimran said.
