cooper connolly Had a memorable start to his Indian Premier League (IPL) career, declaring himself in style with a brilliant debut performance for Punjab Kings. His impressive innings drew comparisons to his idol Shaun Marsh, who had a dream debut in the inaugural 2008 season for the same franchise, then known as Kings XI Punjab.
Connolly scored an unbeaten 72 and was awarded the Player of the Match award for his brilliant effort. He confidently hit two sixes each off Rashid Khan and Kagiso Rabada, showcasing both his skill and fearless approach. Interestingly, despite being part of a batting lineup known for its aggressive intent from the very first ball, Connolly showed maturity by sticking to his natural game. He made a cautious start and scored just three runs from his first five balls.
“I think every player has his own strengths, and I'm quite keen to stick to my strengths. It's been successful for me so far. So, yes, obviously strength is becoming a bigger part of T20 cricket, but there are other ways to get around it [too]. “And it's kind of an understanding and learning thing for me, and I'm going to get through it,” Connolly said in a media interaction, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
“But, yes, I'm very happy with the kind of tempo game at the moment because it's allowing me to bring my best for this team. And even in other tournaments, I think it's something… that I've done for the last five, six years, and I'll slowly adapt to that, and I'll obviously get better in those areas. But I'm looking forward to improving my game and then adding some more things to the puzzle,” he added. Said.
At PBKS, Connolly has been interacting closely with his world-class captain Shreyas Iyer as well as head coach Ricky Ponting. His conversation with Iyer is actually from September-October 2025, when Connolly was representing Australia A in India. Iyer captained India A in the first first-class match and subsequent one-day series, at a time when Connolly had not yet been selected by PBKS.
Since 2024, Connolly has also made his debut for the senior Australian team in all three formats. He believes that his relatively aggressive approach in the longest format helps him align his red-ball and 50-over cricket, making his game in both formats complement each other.
“It's just how do I go from those two formats to T20 cricket, and [from] T20 cricket back in those formats. I think that's the beauty of playing all three formats.'' He said, ''It is a challenge and it will take some time to understand how I have to play between the three formats. But I'm enjoying that challenge, and I'm learning every time… I'm still learning [only] 22. So I'm still trying to figure out what works for me. But yes, that's the beauty of the game. “You can't figure everything out until you're 22,” Connolly said.
“And there's still a lot of time to learn. But I think it's going to be about asking around and understanding how other people think about it, and switching from one format to another, and, yes, just seeing what might work for me and taking notes down and trying it out. And eventually, I'll work something out. But I think there's still some little things that I do that I haven't mastered yet. So I Looking forward to it,” he said.
