England wicketkeeper-batsman jamie smith Has firmly stated that missing out on the Indian Premier League was a blessing in disguise, which will help him improve his red-ball game. Smith put his name in the auction at a base price of Rs 2 crore. However, the youngster failed to attract a single bid and remained unsold. He was then ruled out of England's tour of Sri Lanka and subsequently missed competing in the T20 World Cup.
Despite the failure and despite agreeing that playing in the IPL would significantly improve his overall game, the hard-hitting wicketkeeper remained optimistic and focused on playing in the County Championship until an England call-up came his way in the summer.
“At that time, I would definitely have liked to go [to the IPL]. It's my ambition to strengthen all aspects of my game, and I see the IPL as something that can really enhance the white ball and benefit the red ball again. [game]. Smith's fight for a place in the Test team
Smith has been EnglandHe has been the primary wicketkeeper in the Test team since making his debut in 2024. While he averages 41.48 in the longest format of the game, he averages 21.77 and 26 in ODIs and T20Is respectively.
Despite a relatively disappointing Ashes series, where he scored just 211 runs at an average of 23.44, Smith's place in the Test team should be secure for now. However, there will be competition for the gloves from players like Somerset star James Reeve, who has been in incredible form for the England Lions as he displayed his best cricket against the touring Indian team in mid-2025.
Smith will re-join Surrey before the start of the 2026 County Championship season. The Three Feathers will play their opening match against Warwickshire from 3 April. He will likely be their second-choice wicketkeeper, with Ben Foakes usually being Surrey's main man behind the wicket.
