The wicketkeeper-batsman was not India's first-choice opener going into the marquee event. He played only one game in the group stage as Abhishek Sharma was recovering from a stomach illness. However, he returned to the team for the must-win win against Zimbabwe and never looked back.
Samson returned to form by scoring an attractive half-century against West Indies in the Super 8 stage. After this he scored a half-century against England in the semi-finals and a half-century in the final against New Zealand. The 31-year-old was awarded the Player of the Tournament award after scoring 321 runs in five matches at an average of 80.25 and a strike rate of 199.38.
Samson recently spoke about the conscious policy introduced by captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir, which prioritized team success rather than individual achievements.
“Now everyone is thinking the same way. It was a conscious decision taken by our captain and coach in the dressing room. The consistent message from our leaders to the group is that the team should come first and individual milestones should come second,” Samson said during a recent media interaction.
“That automatically got ingrained in each one of us on the team and that's how we started reacting in every game,” he said.
The former Rajasthan Royals captain said that staying true to his nature has helped him contribute better to the cause of the team.
He said, “Honestly, I think that's my true nature. I never wanted to be selfless. I think I've always wanted to be that way. So I bring with me a lot of different qualities, a lot of strengths and a lot of weaknesses.”
Samson will now turn his focus to IPL 2026, where he will represent Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the first time. He was traded to the five-time champions by Rajasthan Royals in exchange for Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran.
