Mumbai Indians (MI) has long been one of the most successful franchisees in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Not only their on-field talent but also their exact scouting system. Over the years, MI has developed a world -class talent scouting program, which has consistently nurtured young, promising talent who has become a superstar in international cricket. His method of identifying young players has set benchmark for other franchisees, which now has its own for other teams.
Over the years, in addition to fully relying on buying players in the IPL auction, Mumbai Indians Has invested heavily in its scouting network. It conducts a year -long, closely monitors domestic and international tournaments to identify raw talent with capacity. The scouting team not only looks at the numbers, but also evaluates the player's nature and the ability to handle the pressure.
For IPL 2025, Mi's scouting team once again worked hard to bring exciting new talents. One of his latest discoveries is Ashwani Kumar, who launched a dream against Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhed Stadium. The left -handed pace took four important wickets and was named the Player of the Match. Kumar made his way to MI through his difficult scouting system. After being impressed in the Sher E Punjab T20 Trophy, where he displayed his death bowling, the franchise raised him for INR 30 lakh in the IPL 2025 auction. After playing a handful of matches for Punjab first in domestic cricket, Ashwani caught his IPL opportunity with both hands.
Another promising discovery for this season is Vignesh Puthur of Kerala, a left-handed wrist-spinner, who took three wickets in a debut to demonstrate his skills against Chennai Super Kings. Despite the team losing the match, their performance stood out and earned praise from experts. Puthur was first seen by former India's Pesar Ta Sekar. Despite not playing domestic cricket for Kerala, his talent was seen in testing, giving him an IPL contract for IPL 30 million. Vignesh's ability impressed the MI think tank and was sent to South Africa, where he trained with Mi Cape Town batsmen to improve his skills.
Meanwhile, five-time champions invest heavy in foreign talent, an example of New Zealand's middle-order batsman, Bewon Jacobs, who caught the eyeball after his performance in Super Smash 2023-24. With a strike rate of 188.73 for Cantorbury Kings, Jacobs displayed her power-touching capacity, making it an ideal fit for finishing role. Originally from South Africa, Jacobs' approach attracted the attention of John Wright, who further recommended his name.
The process of scouting the talent of Mumbai Indians
The scouting process of MI begins with intensive evaluation of young and upcoming players in various domestic tournaments, including Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Ranji Trophy. Former cricketers and talent scouts such as Kiran More, Abe Kuruvilla, Ta Sekar, Parthiv Patel and John Right have been part of the process. These experts keep a close watch on the upcoming cricketers and follow their performance for several sessions before recommending them for tests.
Once a player was identified, MI's data team analyzed their performance, studying aspects such as strike rate, bowling diversity, fitness levels and mental strength. Shortlisted players are then invited to MI training camps, where they undergo evaluation under the supervision of the head coach, director of cricket operations and senior players.

The final stage includes approval from the leadership group including Captain and owners. Only when a player passes all these checks, does MI move forward with signing them. Over the years, the Mumbai franchise has played an important role in kicking the career of several Indian cricket superstars, including Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Tilak Verma and many more.
Other franchises such as Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capital have now created their own scouting programs and academies. However, no one has matched the stability of MI in finding world class players. With so much experience, the scouting structure of MI remains one step ahead of its network, the presence of pre-international cricketers in lead roles, and a data-operated approach to player analysis.
