The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season is scheduled to begin on March 28, with the final taking place on May 31. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the schedule of the tournament on 11 March.
TeaTheir announcement was delayed due to the clash of the tournament with assembly elections in Assam, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. While Kolkata (in West Bengal) and Chennai (in Tamil Nadu) are the bases for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) respectively, Guwahati (in Assam) is the second base for Rajasthan Royals (RR).
One of the other reasons behind the delay was the uncertainty over the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The venue has not hosted any top-level cricket since the tragic stampede during Royal Challengers Bangalore's 2025 victory parade that left 11 people dead and several injured. However, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) got the nod after extensive discussions with RCB officials.
The opening match of the tournament will be played between defending champions Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and five-time winners Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on March 28 at Chinnaswamy.
Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans will play their first match against Punjab Kings on March 31 at the Maharaja Yadvendra Singh International Cricket Stadium, New Chandigarh.
