On a day where wickets continued to fall, with 12 in all, 20-year-old McKinney top-scored with 94 as the Lions were all out for 213 in their second innings.
The home side eventually reached 97 for one, needing another 164 on day three to win. Tim Ward was unbeaten on 39 off 80 balls, adding 77 runs for the first wicket with Jayden Goodwin.
A young Lions batting line-up, with nine players aged 22 and under, could not fully exploit their advantage with the exclusion of former Under-19 captain McKinney.
The left-handed opener reached his half-century on the ropes with a textbook cover drive but the tail was left as he pulled Gabe Bell and was caught on the boundary, moments away from his century. Lastman Cook scored an easy 23 off 19 balls while he and Baker added 28 for the last wicket. The CAXI wickets were shared around, with Bale and Charlie Anderson getting three wickets each.
Bashir claimed the home side’s only wicket when Goodwin, son of former Zimbabwean and Sussex batsman Murray, was trapped lbw by Bashir on 35. Raf McMillan was unbeaten on 11 runs.
