pat brown England Lions produced a stellar performance on the opening day of their second tour game against Cricket Australia XI in Brisbane, claiming a hat-trick of five-wicket hauls on the way.

Henry Hunt was his first victim, dismissing James Coles more conventionally at second slip, before Jack Clayton was shoulder-bowled. The Derbyshire right-hander was about to celebrate his hat-trick when Hugo Burden edged past wicketkeeper James Rew. Brown had figures of 5 for 21 runs in eight overs and the home team was all out for 214 runs.

Brown, making the first change, ran through the top of the order and had opener Nivethan Radhakrishnan caught by Coles on a rising ball before he could complete his hat-trick.

England Lions were 53 for one at stumps, with Ben McKinney the only wicket to fall on 32. Captain Alex Davis and nightwatcher Shoaib Bashir (one) remained unbeaten on 15 runs each.

Ryan Hicks top-scored for CA XI with 64 before Brown became the fifth wicket-keeper. Hicks brought up his half-century in 78 balls, before Brown found another ball to lift at a good length and McKinney found wide at first slip. Sam Cook took 2 wickets for 31 runs.
