Shubman Gill has made it clear that personal milestones and satisfaction are not on his agenda in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. Gujarat Titans The skipper, who has experienced a challenging journey in India's T20I setup in the last year, said his primary focus is on leading his franchise to another title.
Gill was dropped, recalled and even elevated to vice-captain for the Asia Cup, before ultimately failing to earn selection for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 hosted by India. Despite the ups and downs, this stylish opener remains unfazed and confident about its performance.
“I think if you look at the last three or four seasons, I think I have scored the most runs in the IPL. So, I don't think I have anything to prove this season. And in the four years I have played for this team, I think we have performed well as a team. And I think I have performed well as a batsman as well,” Gill said in a press conference ahead of the IPL.
The 26-year-old has been one of the most consistent performers in the IPL in recent years. His 650-run campaign in IPL 2025 played a crucial role in Gujarat Titans reaching the knockouts before being eliminated against Mumbai Indians. Notably, Gill's total since 2020 remains unmatched among batsmen in the league, underscoring his dominance at the top.
“So, I don't think I need to prove my worth to anyone. I think I need to keep doing what I have been doing for the last four years. And as a team, we need to be consistent, which I think we have been. And if we continue to do that sooner or later, I think we will win that trophy once again,” he said.
After a productive IPL season and a successful Test tour of England, where he also led the team, Beloved He was recalled to India's T20I setup and named vice-captain. He took part in the Asia Cup and the subsequent series at home. However, due to poor performances with the bat, he was eventually dropped from India's World Cup-winning squad after failing to register a half-century in 15 innings in 2025.
Despite setbacks, Gill is clear about his priorities
“Right now my personal goal is obviously to win the IPL. Once that's over, obviously we have to organize some other tournaments within the team, so my personal goals will change into that. And that's how I like to look at my goals,” he said.
With a clear mindset, Gill will be keen to convert his individual talent into collective success as Gujarat Titans eye another IPL title. They will begin their 2026 campaign against Punjab Kings on March 31 in Mullanpur.
