Delhi Capitals SWOT Analysis 2026

After an inconsistent IPL 2025 campaign marred by top-order instability and weak bowling support, Delhi Capitals used the mini-auction to fix the gaps and be more settled in the 2026 season. Entering the IPL 2026 mini-auction with a purse of Rs 21.8 crore and a settled playing XI. The franchise released several players who failed to perform consistently last year, including Faf du Plessis and Jake Fraser-McGurk, who were both part of a shaky opening unit last season.

DC also dropped options like Donovan Ferreira, Mohit Sharma and Darshan Nalkande to free up budget and space in the squad. At the auction, they secured David Miller and Ben Duckett at base price while meeting finishing and opening requirements at minimal cost. Pathum Nissanka and Prithvi Shaw were added to directly solve the biggest issue of a solid opening pair from last season.

The major investment was uncapped all-rounder Auqib Nabi Dar, who was signed for Rs 8.4 crore. They also strengthened their squad with Lungi Ngidi and Kyle Jamieson, both bought at base price. Notably, DC has retained KL Rahul, Axar Patel, Tristan Stubbs, Kuldeep Yadav and Mitchell Starc. Furthermore, they traded Nitish Rana to Rajasthan Royals.

In IPL 2025, DC struggled due to constant experimentation, especially at the top. Eight different starting combinations demonstrated his poor planning. The presence of Ben Duckett, Pathum Nissanka and Prithvi Shaw this season gives DC solid options depending on the conditions.

The middle order is quite strong. The inclusion of David Miller along with Tristan Stubbs and Ashutosh Sharma has resolved the problem of late overs collapse seen last year. Notably, bowling is DC's strongest department. Starc, Kuldeep and T Natarajan form a brilliant wicket-taking trio. Furthermore, Auqib Nabi Dar is expected to be their X factor.

weaknesses

Although the early choices are better on paper, there is no guarantee of a first-choice pairing. Duckett, Nissanka and Shaw all come with instability in form that can attract attention if results go wrong. The depth of fast bowling largely depends on the foreign fast bowlers. If Starc or Ngidi are unavailable or out of form, DC may struggle again, similar to IPL 2025 when Mukesh Kumar lacked consistency in the death overs. Another point of concern is the price tag of Auqib Nabi Dar. At Rs 8.4 crore, expectations would be high from an uncapped player. If he fails to translate the domestic form into IPL impact, DC may face balance issues.

opportunity

IPL 2026 provides a clear opportunity for DC to finally convert potential into consistency. The stable Indian core will allow the team to create combinations rather than reshuffling them in every game, unlike last season. KL Rahul's flexibility will once again be a major point of discussion. He can open or anchor at No. 3, which DC lacked in IPL 2025. Players like Stubbs, Ashutosh and Vipraj Nigam have different roles, giving DC better clarity. Auqib Nabi Dar provides long-term value if he develops into a reliable power-play enforcer. His domestic figures reflect his wicket-taking intent, an area where DC sorely missed last year.

threats

The biggest threat for Delhi Capitals is performing under pressure. In IPL 2025, DC often lost close matches due to poor death bowling and batting collapse. Results will depend on decision making at critical moments. Excessive reliance on foreign players could damage the balance when injuries occur. If early results go against them, DC will run the risk of making frequent changes, the same pattern that derailed their IPL 2025 season.
