The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season is scheduled to begin on March 28, with the final taking place on May 31. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the schedule of the tournament on 11 March.
The announcement was delayed due to the clash of the tournament with assembly elections in Assam, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. While Kolkata (in West Bengal) and Chennai (in Tamil Nadu) are the bases for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) respectively, Guwahati (in Assam) is the second base for Rajasthan Royals (RR).
One of the other reasons behind the delay was the uncertainty over the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The venue has not hosted any top-level cricket since the tragic stampede during Royal Challengers Bangalore's 2025 victory parade that left 11 people dead and several injured. However, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) got the nod after extensive discussions with RCB officials.
The opening match of the tournament will be played between defending champions Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and one-time winners Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on March 28 at Chinnaswamy.
CSK will play its first match against RR on March 30 in Guwahati.
