McCullum suggested that Butler had to take Butler to his side instead of any deficiencies under his captaincy. Even when England struggled in white -ball ICC events since winning the 2022 T20I World Cup, Butler often found himself a leading side on bilateral tourism which was not close to full force.

McCullum kept returning to the subject of Butler’s captaincy, and how he felt that it would be more politely remembered than raw results. He said that Butler had established a solid base for his replacement, compared to the England Test’s health compared to a series of indifferent results in 2022 after a test captain after the resignation of Joe Root.

While Harry Brook is a favorite for making Butler a success, McCullum said that England did not decide on a successor. While this is partially, because in McCullum’s words, Butler’s resignation “came a little soon”, he realized that it also talks to the characters from England.
“Some are really good leaders who have developed,” said McCullum. “This is a mark of Jose’s captaincy, he brought other leaders within the group. They are not essential experienced players, but they are young who have received good cricketing knowledge and they have encouraged them to learn and develop as leaders.
