The five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions had the expected run fest at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium on March 29. Mumbai Indians Hosted Kolkata Knight Riders in their opening match of IPL 2026.
After being invited to bat first, KKR openers Ajinkya Rahane and Finn Allen gave the visitors a great start and stitched a quickfire partnership of 69 runs in just 5.2 overs. The Kiwi batsman scored 37 runs in 17 balls, while the KKR captain led from the front, scoring 67 runs in just 40 balls. Young batsman Angkrish Raghuvanshi also scored an important half-century by playing an excellent inning of 51 runs in 29 balls.
The three-time IPL winning team made a challenging score of 220 runs in 20 overs. For MI, Shardul Thakur was the star of the show as he took three wickets for just 39 runs in his four overs. Captain Hardik Pandya also took one wicket.
Chasing a tough target of 221 runs. Rohit Sharma He took the responsibility upon himself by thrashing KKR bowlers in the powerplay overs. The veteran batsman performed brilliantly, completing his 48th IPL half-century as he scored 78 runs in just 38 balls, which included six huge sixes. He was well supported by his opening partner Ryan Rickelton, who scored 81 runs from 43 balls. To easily achieve the target, Suryakumar Yadav (16 runs on 8 balls), Tilak Verma (20 runs on 14 balls) and Hardik Pandya (18 runs on 11 balls) gave the finishing touch.
Interestingly, MI started their campaign with a win for the first time since IPL 2012, ending 13 years of season-opening woes.
