The Indian Premier League (IPL) has become the world's largest and richest cricket-based franchise tournament. The League has excessively changed changes, new rules and even new franchises have been added and stumbled. After starting in 2008, the tournament has also expanded the 10-team program from 2022 to 10-team after Editon of Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants.
There are some significant changes on the card about the length of the tournament, with IPL Chairman Arun Dhuman indicated that the current 74-Match incident can be expanded to 94 games per season by 2028.
Dhumal mentioned that the League was planned for 84 matches in 2025, but the scheduling issues and the disintegration of the broadcaster towards a lot of double header meant that BCCI had to live with the current 74-Match scheme. Dhumal has also explained how there have been changes about the interests of fans changing the dynamics towards bilateral and ICC events.
“Certainly, this can be an opportunity, we are discussing in ICC, we are discussing the in-house in BCCI. Given how the fan's interest is changing in relation to bilateral and ICC events, in relation to franchise cricket and T20 cricket, we have to talk more seriously about it and want to perform maximum for the game. For this, you need 94 games, ”the President of the IPL was said by Espncricinfo.
“Looking at the window and the kind of commitments that we have in relation to bilateral cricket and ICC Incidents, which may not be possible in short term. But given the scenario, how it has been changing and developing over the years, perhaps at some time we will see and take that option.
“There is a lot of cricket: we came back from Australia from a test series, we had this Champions Trophy, and we have this IPL on top. That is why it was decided that it does not understand by going from 74 to 84. [in 2025]But whenever we think that time is suitable, we will take that call.
'Ten is a good number for now' – Arun Dhumal besides the new franchise
It has also been claimed that the tournament may have a new franchise, however, Dhumal clarified that there is no such plan to increase the number of teams in the short term.
“Ten is a good number for now, is interested in paramount tournament, and the quality of cricket we play … I do not see any scope in the short term. Moving forward, how this whole landscape develops, we will take a call accordingly,” Dhumal concluded.
