Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) cricketer and former South African cricketer Faf du Plessis has praised the all-rounder a lot. Sam Curran Ahead of the 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League. The English cricketer has joined Rajasthan Royals (RR) along with Ravindra Jadeja as part of a trade deal that saw Sanju Samson go to CSK.
Du Plessis acknowledged Curran's recent good form and also praised his leadership qualities which could come in handy in a team that will be led by a relatively inexperienced captain in Riyan Parag. The former Proteas international believes the 27-year-old is a bowler for all conditions and has something to offer depending on the situation in front of him.
Du Plessis said via Geostar, “Sam Curran had a very good season in T20 cricket last year. With The Hundred, he did really well and won another trophy. Around the world, he has done really well in T20 cricket. So I think they will look at him as someone who is really in form at the moment. He is doing well for England and playing a tough role, often coming in when the team is in trouble. It happens.”
“So, the versatility you get from Sam Curran is very important for the team because he gives you one over in the powerplay, bowls his cutters in the middle, and is really good at death bowling, whether with yorkers or slower balls. So you are getting a lot of skill sets there. Also, he is bringing experience and captaincy support for a young captain in that dressing room. The more leaders you have around you, the better support you will have for Ryan.”
Curran comes into the 2026 edition of this cash-rich tournament on the back of very good form in both international and franchise cricket. The left-hander was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the 2025–26 season of the International League T20 (ILT20), where he also captained the Desert Vipers to their maiden title.
The young all-rounder also finished as the leading run-scorer in the tournament with 397 runs at an average of less than 50, which is extraordinary in T20 cricket. He also took eight wickets and six catches and was named player of the match in the final. He also became a part of the Oval Invincibles team that retained their Men's Hundred title in 2025.
Both Du Plessis and Curran were part of CSK's title-winning team in 2021. The English player will represent Punjab Kings for two seasons before moving back to the MA Chidambaram Stadium in 2025, where he played just five matches before eventually finding a home in Rajasthan, a franchise he will play for for the first time in 2026.
