Injury concerns remain Chennai Super Kings Ahead of their Indian Premier League 2026 campaign, Dewald Brevis was ruled out of the season opener against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on Monday, March 30. The South African batsman suffered a side strain during a training session, ruling him out of the five-time IPL champions' opening clash.
Head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed the setback during a pre-match press conference on 28 March. They will face Rajasthan Royals in their opening match. Although there is no definite timeline for Brewis' return, the franchise remains optimistic about his availability for their second match against Punjab Kings on April 3.
This is another blow for the Super Kings, who are already struggling with several injury concerns. It is expected that former CSK captain MS Dhoni will not be able to play in the initial phase of the tournament due to calf strain. According to reports, the former India captain has not traveled with the team to Guwahati and is currently undergoing recovery in Chennai.
To add to their troubles, Australian fast bowler Nathan Ellis has already been ruled out of the entire tournament due to a hamstring injury. His replacement Spencer Johnson is also recovering from a back strain and is likely to join the team in the second half of April.
brevisIncluded as an injury replacement for Gurjapaneet Singh last season, he had emerged as one of the few positives in an otherwise disappointing IPL 2025 campaign for CSK. The explosive middle-order batsman scored 225 runs in six matches at an impressive average of 37.50 and an excellent strike rate of 180.
It will be interesting to see who CSK will choose in place of the South African batsman. Indian middle-order batsman Sarfaraz Khan will be an attractive option for them, as he can face spinners in the middle overs just like Brewis.
