The 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) will take place at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, March 29 when the hosts Mumbai Indians (MI) Take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Both sides will go into their first game of the new IPL season with a lot of promise and will be looking to register two points on the board. MI, however, will be banking on home advantage to defeat their long-term rivals in front of a sea of blue packets in the stands.
After what happened against KKR at the Wankhede Stadium last time, the Hardik Pandya-led team will go into the game with a lot of confidence. Last season, MI had registered an emphatic eight-wicket win after bowling out their opponents for just 116 runs thanks to Ashwini Kumar's four-wicket haul. MI chased the target easily with the help of Ryan Rickelton's unbeaten 62 runs.
Wankhede Stadium is famous for having some of the best wickets for T20 cricket. So fans can expect an even competition between bat and ball and the pitches will be fresh at the start of the tournament.
Wankhede Stadium: Pitch Report
Wankhede Stadium is often regarded as one of the best batting wickets in India. However, this does not mean that there is nothing for the bowlers. Batsmen often enjoy batting at the Wankhede Stadium because of the ease with which the ball comes onto the bat as well as the combination of short boundaries, especially the square of the wicket.
However, the bowlers will want to use the new ball to take early wickets early in the innings. With the stadium being a short distance from the Arabian Sea, fast bowlers can try to make the most of the sea breeze.
