captain of all 10 Indian Premier League (IPL) The franchises have expressed their doubts over the 'Impact Sub' ahead of the start of the 19th season of the tournament.
At the traditional all-captains meeting held at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquarters in Mumbai, the captains expressed their concerns to the officials about the decision. Despite the objections raised by the team captains, it has been made clear that any re-evaluation will be done only after the conclusion of the 2027 IPL season.
First introduced in 2023, the Impact Sub rule allows a team to bring in a substitute for one of their existing players in the playing eleven at any stage of the game. This rule was used by teams to replace the bowler with the batsman during their bowling innings or vice versa to give them an extra specialist. This decision has diminished the role of an all-rounder in the team and many have suggested that it may also hinder the development of young all-rounders in the country.
According to reports, one of the most senior captains had expressed his disapproval of the Impact Player rule among all Indian captains before one of the previous editions of the IPL and he got strong support from the other captains present.
Despite its negative aspects, one advantage of the Impact Player rule is that it allows an additional Indian player to participate in an IPL game. Most of the Impact subs have been Indian players as teams are allowed to play only four foreign players, including substitutes, in a game.
In the past few years, players designated as impact subscriptions have been used in a game, such as Shivam Dubey for Chennai Super Kings.
