'Hardik himself should refuse captaincy'

Former Indian cricketer Chris Srikkanth has given this opinion hardik pandya There is a need to hand over the captaincy of Mumbai Indians to Suryakumar Yadav.

Since 2024, the Mumbai Indians captaincy saga has been one to watch, filled with disagreements, varying opinions and various accounts in the media. Hardik Pandya, who was traded from Gujarat Titans, was immediately given the captaincy of the franchise upon his return. Following a last-place finish in 2024, Hardik faced jeers in almost every home game. Mumbai made it to the playoffs in 2025, but the lack of a trophy has become a topic of discussion.

The former Indian batsman believes that the franchise needs to come together and find a solution, which according to him would be handing over the captaincy. Suryakumar YadavWho recently led the Indian team in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth said, “They have to get the franchise owners and the team management together with Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya and get it right again. They should ask Surya to lead this year to see if there is a change in fortunes. They can appoint Surya as captain anytime. They don't need to announce it right now.”

Under whose leadership was MI's last IPL win in 2020 Rohit SharmaWho also gave India the T20 World Cup in 2024. Srikkanth believes that the obvious choice to take over the reins of MI is Suryakumar Yadav.

“It's a strange situation. Hardik Pandya is a good captain. But, yes, they now have two T20 World Cup-winning captains playing under them. It's some internal policy within their setup that they have to sort out. From the outside, the obvious choice should be Suryakumar Yadav. But that could be a franchise policy,” he said.

Srikkanth further said that the process would be easier if Hardik willingly hands over the captaincy to Suryakumar while remaining a credible presence under both the captains of the Indian team.

“This is a strange situation, because Hardik played under Rohit and Surya to help India win the World Cup. Otherwise, Hardik himself should refuse the captaincy and let Surya lead. If Hardik himself says this to the management, then things will be resolved. They should say, 'Let Surya lead and I will support'. This is one way to resolve it,” Srikkanth explained.

Mumbai Indians will play their first match of the season on March 29 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium.
