'It is wrong to go with Riyan Parag' – blunt statement of former Indian cricketer on RR's captaincy choice

Former Indian cricketer Subramaniam Badrinath Rajasthan Royals' decision to appoint Riyan Parag as captain despite players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravindra Jadeja has been strongly criticized.

Parag, who was handed the leadership responsibility last season in the absence of Sanju Samson, had struggled to make a significant impact with the bat. With RR still going ahead with this option, questions are being raised whether the franchise has made the right decision by backing the young all-rounder.

The former CSK batsman minced no words while sharing his assessment and emphasized that if an established star like Jaiswal was the obvious captaincy choice for the inaugural IPL champions.

Badrinath said on his YouTube channel, “Yashasvi Jaiswal has represented India so much and is the future of Indian cricket. He is already playing Test and ODI cricket. So, not supporting him and going with Riyan Parag is definitely wrong. Probably, Yashasvi Jaiswal has no relatives who own RR (sarcasm). I also wonder if RR had lured Jadeja from CSK with captaincy talks, But that didn't happen later.”

Riyan Parag continues to be one of the most exciting young talents in the Indian domestic circuit. His ability to bat and hit sixes at will as well as contribute with the ball makes him a unique asset.

'Rajasthan Royals is my home'- Ryan Parag's reaction on captaincy appointment

The 24-year-old player opened up on his appointment as Rajasthan Royals captain ahead of the 2026 season.

“Rajasthan Royals has been my home since day one in the IPL. This franchise has supported me, developed me and inspired me to grow every season. Now leading this team is incredibly special, and it is a responsibility I fully embrace. I am excited to work with our coaches and leadership group to play fearless, smart cricket and make our fans proud,” RR quoted him as saying.

Parag has played 83 matches in the IPL, scoring 1566 runs at an excellent strike rate of over 140. He has also taken seven wickets, demonstrating his all-round ability.
