The inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL 2008) auction sheet, which included the former India and Chennai Super Kings captain, ms dhoniIt was shared by former IPL auctioneer Richard Madley in 2019. This then gave rise to nostalgic memories of one of the most iconic moments in the history of the cash-rich league.
Notably, the hammer fell on the great Dhoni on February 20, 2008. In that auction, the wicketkeeper-batsman was successfully acquired by one of the most popular IPL franchises, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for $1.5 million. Interestingly, CSK had bid more than another popular franchise Mumbai Indians (MI) to acquire the services of the veteran player.
Let us tell you, before the auction, unlike other IPL teams, Chennai had to face some backlash from fans for not naming an icon player of the franchise. However, amid all the criticism, they included the Jharkhand cricketer and later appointed him as the captain. Dhoni led CSK from the front and helped them win five titles.
Posting the photo, Madley described Dhoni's bidding action as one of the most iconic in his career and the history of cricket.
Richard Madeley, who organized the auction in 2008, shared a photo of the “first auction sheet”. On that sheet were written the details of Dhoni's purchases along with fellow iconic players like Shane Warne, Shoaib Akhtar, Adam Gilchrist, Muttiah Muralitharan and Mahela Jayawardene.

Dhoni led CSK last season after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out due to injury. The men in yellow finished last for the first time in a season. Chennai is entering Tuesday's IPL 2026 mini-auction with the second-largest purse. After releasing a number of players last month, the five-time champions will be looking to field a strong squad with an eye on a comeback next year.
