IPL 2026: 'CSK will pick Iyer first' – Ashwin breaks down franchise's auction plans

former indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has offered an in-depth explanation of Chennai Super Kings (CSK)'s strategy ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction, emphasizing their clear intention to rebuild after a disappointing last season. With a strong purse of Rs 43.40 crore, CSK is expected to pursue targeted acquisitions, especially after the return of key foreign players like Glenn Maxwell.

Ashwin highlighted that the priority for the franchise would be to secure an Indian all-rounder, possibly Venkatesh Iyer, followed by an overseas all-rounder, with Liam Livingstone identified as a key option.

“CSK's first priority will be Venkatesh Iyer. They might have thought of Maxwell second. Now that he is out, it will be Livingstone,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Despite fetching a whopping Rs 23.75 crore in the last mega-auction, Iyer faced a disappointing IPL 2025 season with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He has now entered the upcoming auction with the highest base price of Rs 2 crore. Meanwhile, Livingstone, who was released by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), has rediscovered his form in the International League T20 2025, making him one of the most sought-after overseas options.

CSK created financial flexibility by releasing players like Mathisha Pathirana, while Ravichandran Ashwin's retirement from the IPL added another Rs 9 crore to their purse. Ashwin described the decision to let Pathirana go as a calculated move and stressed that it was made to free up funds to pursue marquee all-rounders in the auction.

Ashwin said, “Most teams felt that Andre Russell would be in the auction even before his release. Keeping this in mind, CSK wanted to pick Russell or Cameron Green. But with Rs 30 crore, they had no chance, and hence Mathisha Pathirana's release seemed certain.”

The need for a major strategic overhaul, as underlined by Ashwin, stems directly from CSK's disastrous 2025 campaign, one of the most disappointing seasons in the franchise's illustrious history. Despite the team's overall struggles, a few players stood out, with Shivam Dubey emerging as their leading run-scorer and Afghanistan spinner Noor Ahmed topping the bowling charts with 24 wickets.
