Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has confirmed that the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches will not be shifted from Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. He assured that all the events of IPL 2026 will take place at the venue as per the schedule. Shivakumar made this statement at the Chinnaswamy Stadium after casting his vote in the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) elections on Sunday, December 7.
When he was asked about concerns over the possible relocation of major matches, including IPL games, following the recent tragedy that occurred during RCB's victory celebrations, he strongly rejected any such possibility. He also answered questions regarding hosting of upcoming Women's T20 World Cup matches and reiterated that the state government and authorities will ensure complete preparation and security for all major cricket events.
“It is an honor for the state of Karnataka and Bengaluru. We will take steps to ensure that the next IPL matches are held here. We will allow whatever matches are available in the coming days,” Shivakumar was quoted as saying by Tribune.
Shivakumar said he is a long-time cricket fan and expressed confidence in the preparation of the stadium for big tournaments. He said the government is planning to build a larger, alternative cricket stadium in Bengaluru to meet future infrastructure demands and ease crowd management concerns.
RCB won the title for the first time in 17 years in front of a huge crowd at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. However, due to overcrowding, inadequate arrangements and lack of proper information, the celebration turned disastrous, resulting in several deaths and many injuries.
Shivakumar said, “I am a member of KSCA. When I was young, Nagraj gave me membership. His son is my classmate. I know many people from Brijesh Patel, including Anil Kumble and Prasanna. I voted for those I wanted.”
He said, “I am a cricket fan. We will take care that the recent disaster does not happen again and will ensure that the dignity of the stadium is maintained. The stadium will be developed by managing the crowd within the legal framework. Besides, we will also build a bigger stadium as an alternative.”
The IPL 2026 auction is scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi on December 16, marking the third consecutive year that the event will be held abroad. Unlike the mega auction, the 2026 edition will follow the mini-auction format and is expected to be completed in a single day. Ahead of the auction, the defending champions have made several notable releases. The franchise has severed ties with the England all-rounder liam livingstoneWho struggled to get consistent opportunities in the team.
RCB has also released South African fast bowler Lungi Ngidi, who was mainly available as a backup option last season. Additionally, New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Seifert and Zimbabwean fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani have been let go as the team reshapes its overseas lineup for the upcoming season.
