IPL teams often regret the release of players. In a league where the team composition changes every season due to auctions, form, injuries and budget constraints, franchises sometimes let go of cricketers who were either big names in the format or had become fan favourites. Management may have to make difficult decisions due to age, poor performance, or the need to restructure the team.
Yet, many of these decisions come back to haunt them when those same players perform at their best elsewhere. Time and again, released stars have become match-winners for rival teams, creating a feeling of regret for their former franchises.
Here are 5 teams that regret releasing players
5. Kolkata Knight Riders – Chris Gayle

West Indies legend Chris Gayle's IPL career started with Kolkata Knight Riders, where he displayed his explosive batting for the first time. During his two seasons with the franchise, Gayle scored 463 runs in 16 innings, including his best score of 88* in IPL 2010. Despite glimpses of his potential, KKR released him before the 2011 season, a decision that would later become one of the most turning points in IPL history.
Once released, Gayle was selected by Royal Challengers Bangalore as a replacement player. He instantly became the heartthrob of the Bengaluru crowd, winning consecutive Orange Caps and setting batting records with his six-hitting ability. His aggressive attitude made him an IPL icon. KKR's decision to part ways with Gayle is remembered as a big mistake, as the 'Universe Boss' became a legend of the game.
