Adar Poonwalla, CEO of Serum Institute of India, has indicated the possibility of getting a stake in the Indian Premier League (IPL) Franchise Franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). On Wednesday, October 1, Poonwal expressed his interest in investing in the franchise, currently owned by United Spirits, the owner of RCB.

Under the leadership of Rajat Patidar, RCB won its first title by defeating Punjab Kings (PBK) in the final of the 18th edition of the Cash-Rich League. However, on 4 June, M. Outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium, a stampede resulted in 11 deaths and more than 50 people were injured.
A large crowd of about three lakh people gathered to watch the RCB's first IPL Trophy victory ceremony. Following the tragic incident, the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) blamed the RCB, and speculation about the possible sales of the franchise.
Poonwal's comments came after Lalit Modi, the first commissioner of IPL, added fuel to speculation on Tuesday. Modi said that there may be no better investment than purchasing RCB, emphasizing that important global funds or sovereign money funds would be eager to include franchise in their investment and India's strategies.
“There have been a lot of rumors about the sale of an IPL franchise, especially in the RCB – well in the past. But it seems that the owners have finally decided to take off their balance sheet and sell.
“I am sure that one of the big global funds or a sovereign fund will prefer him strictly as his investment strategy and part of India's strategy. There may be no better investment opportunity, I can think that it is one. Whoever can get his hand on it. Best wishes to all.
The most recent ownership change in the IPL saw the Torrent Group, a diverse group with interests in healthcare and energy fields, acquiring a two-thirds majority stake in Gujarat Titans (GT). As part of the deal, Irelia maintained a significant minority stake of 33% in the franchise.
