Former Indian cricketer Akash Chopra The IPL has proposed five rule changes before the 2026 season. Amidst his suggestions, he emphasized that teams should be awarded a bonus point for a loud victory, arguing that it would make the later stages of the tournament more exciting for fans.
Currently, the IPL points table mainly rank teams with total points, serving as a tiebreaker for the aspects ending at the winning and net run rates. Chopra believes that introducing a bonus point system for commanding win will add a new strategic element to the tournament and will further intensify the competition during the business end of the IPL.
“Bring a bonus point. Currently focusing on the net run-rate. I think it does not bring so much thrill on day-to-day basis. The simple fund is to give a bonus point. If you play 20 percent better than the opposing team. If you have scored 200 runs, stop the opposition of less than 160.
“The teams will come to the odd points and it will become a little more thrilling. No one can feel so, but when we reach the end of the tournament business, it will suddenly bring more adventure. Wherever you are in a season, you are not really outside. A string of victory with bonus points will cover for some damage,” he said.
Chopra also suggested that teams should be allowed to field a substantial player for serious injuries, currently similar to the Consulation Options Rules. Additionally, Chopra recommended adjustment to the teams to help better use the mid-season transfer window of the IPL, allowing the franchisees to strengthen their squads more flexibility as the tournament proceeds.
“You get a kind of option for an equal-equal-similar. Why does it not even for a serious injury? BCCI is already doing first class cricket. We are flagbie.
“It exists, but it is never exercised. It is a mid-season transfer. If you have not named a player in your 16-play list, including sub options, in the first eight matches, make it available automatically. Each team should essentially nominate three such players. You can bring unnecessary resources in the table to meet the tournament standard?” He said.
The cricketer-turn-commentator also proposed that leg-side wides should be strictly marked and punished in the IPL, ensuring the fair play and more accurate scoring. He recommended the Big Bash League (BBL) to consider the introduction of the Power Serge Rules, which would allow teams to accelerate their innings strategically.
