Former Australia captain and legend Ricky Ponting Opened on Shubman Gill After the retirement of Rohit Sharma from the longest format of the game, becoming India's new Test captain. Ponting gave his thumb to the move and understood why many were advocating against it, Jasprit Bumrah led the side in Rohit's absence during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25.
Australians felt that Bumrah's injuries meant that he was out of controversy for captaincy. Ponting believed that Choosing Gill was the right decision Indian Test captain and the star player was expected to get a fair run in his new role.
“I really feel that this is the right step. I know there are lots of other people, the pundits said that they cannot understand why it was not Bumrah and why they have gone to Shubman, but I think it's very simple,” Ponting In ICC review.
“Bumrah's injuries have been a little behind him in the last few years, and you don't want to with a captain. You may not have a captain and there is a missing game coming here and there, so I think it's the right decision. Now that they have made it, they got to give a good crack for a long period,” said Potting.

Australian noted Gill's way of handling Gujarat's Titans in the IPL, showing that it was the captain material. He felt that Gill Scoring Run in the IPL would help him gain confidence to score the longest run of the game.
“Even just looking back in the way he is handling this current GT (Gujarat Titans) team through this IPL, I think the leadership really sits well with him. And the important thing with me is the important thing to me if you are a batsman and you are a captain, then you have to do this work.
