Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin chose all-rounder Ravindra jadeja Rohit Sharma as a possible candidate to lead the national team in the test format after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Red-Ball cricket.
Virat Kohli also retired from the longest format of the game on May 12, Jadeja became the most experienced player in the Indian Test team. Ashwin believes that Jadeja can be used as a transitional captain for two years, which, meanwhile a younger player gets a chance to improve his skills.
“Let's not forget, Jadeja is the most experienced player in the team. He should be in conversation. If you are ready to train a new man for two years and then make him a captain, Jadeja can do the same for two years. He (India) can also play him (under Jadeja). It seems that I am throwing in a wildard.
A leader should know what is happening in first -class cricket: R Ashwin
According to various reports, Shubman Gill is one of the pioneers who became India's new Test captain. Ashwin feels that the infection under the 25 -year -old captaincy will be easier if he can take Gujarat Titans for the Indian Premier League (IPL) title this year. However, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) spinner said that whoever becomes a new Test captain will have to follow first -class cricket.
“I hope Gujarat Titans qualify for the IPL playoffs. If Gill is respected there, it can make his transition easier for leadership. But captaincy, especially in tests, is not about a good weather. A leader should know what is happening in first -class cricket,” he said.
Gill has led India in five T20I. These games were played against Zimbabwe in Harare last year and India won 4–1. Meanwhile, Jadeja never led India in any format. Gill is already the vice-captain of India in ODI cricket, and if the reports are to be believed, it is only a matter of time before being unveiled as a new Test skipper.
