Gujarat Titans (GT) Won three wickets (DLS method) at Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday, May 6 against Mumbai Indians (MI), to go to the top Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 points table.
Shubman Gill won the toss and opted for the first field. Mohammad Sirj hit the second ball of the match as he sent Ryan Recelton Packing. Arshad Khan calculated Rohit Sharma's wicket in the fourth over as MI lost both his openers for 26 runs. Later in the game, Suryakumar Yadav and Will Jack captured the Reprus and stitched a significant partnership. However, a batting collapse ended him with only 155/8 on the board.
Gujarat Titans faced their own batting downfall and eventually required 15 runs in the last over in an innings with two rain breaks. Deepak Char was killed by Rahul Tawatiya and Gerald Koetzi for one four and six respectively. The right hand pace also bowled a ball, which did not help the cause of MI. Koetzi was dropped from the penaltimet ball, as Arshad Khan needed to score a run from the final delivery. The former MI player drilled Hardik Pandya in the mid-off, who missed a run-out opportunity at the end of the non-strayer.
talking points
1. Rashid Khan shows signs of returning as Khan
Rashid Khan performed a wonderful magic for Gujarat through the middle over. He kept the dangerous pair of Jack and Suryakumar calm. Afghan Stalwart was responsible for Jack's wicket, who was MI's top scorer. In his four overs, Rashid scored just 21 runs and took a wicket. During the mid-wall break, he told the commentators that he felt that he was 70–75% of his major self.
2. Jasprit Bumrah's talent brings back MI to the game
Gujarat's Titans were hovering in the first rain break, requiring just 49 runs with eight wickets in the last six overs. Shubman and Sherfen Rutherford wanted to take GT home after rain gaps. However, Jasprit Bumrah bowled a peach to cast the GT captain, and it opened the flood. Experienced semen also won the wicket of Shahrukh Khan and ended with unprecedented figures of 2/19 in his four overs.
3. Batting collapses for both teams
Interestingly, both MI and GT faced the same batting collapse. The third wicket partnership for MI scored 71 runs from 43 balls. However, from 97/2, they reached 123/7. Meanwhile, GT was in a comfortable position in its run-chase at 113/2. However, Bumrah and his fellow MI bowlers bowled with much patience and determination to reduce visitors by 126/6.
who said what?
Hardik Pandya, MI (losing captain)
I think we really fought well, we kept moving as a group. I think it was not 150 wickets, but we were less than 25 runs. Credit to the bowlers because they (during the innings) continued to fight. The dropped catches cut you, but the catch did not bite us much. Really happy with boys to give your 120 percent in the field and not give up. The ground was not wet in the first innings, but it was difficult for us because it was coming in the rain (during the second innings). We had to play the game and we did so.
Shubman Gill, GT (match captain and player win)
When we used to bat after the train, there was a little chaos, but was always good to be a W towards you. Sports plans in Powerplay were different, as if it felt like a Test match. We wanted to take the game after the powerplay but the rain continued. The wicket was a bit slow, with rain, it was not easy to hit the shots, so we thought when it is in our area, we were going for it. It was disappointing, we were ahead in a phase but we lost 4/20. But, the universe gave us a chance and we took it. When the match goes to the back ball when you follow 150, every contribution becomes important. You get such a win in these big tournaments like IPL. He is returning from injury, it is not easy. Such ideas can crawl but we need to take every game. When you come into the game, it is about giving and giving you everything.
