'Someone needs to be accountable'

Rajasthan Royals (RR) suffered a 100 -run defeat against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Jaipur on 1 May, which was excluded from the IPL 2025 playoff race. The necklace not only ended the RR's campaign, but also questioned their east-seasons, especially the release of Jose Butler. Former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist slammed the franchise management to get out of the star English batter.

Royals, who retained six players before the 2025 season, made headlines by giving big players to go NitamTrent Bault, and Yuzvendra Chahal. The decision disrupted him to a great extent. Captain Sanju Samson was injured for most of the season and the young Indian core underperforming, RR was struggling to win the game. In 11 matches, they have managed to win only three wins so far. Gilchrist mentioned in his criticism that someone should be accountable for the decision.

“We heard that Mike Hussey admitted that he (CSK) went wrong in the auction, and they are out. Some need to be accountable to what happened with the decision on Jose Butler. RR has done it wrong, and they end themselves.

Meanwhile, Butler has excelled in its new franchise, Gujarat Titans, after being acquired for INR 15.75 crore in the mega auction. Although he is batting at number 3 instead of his general opening slot, the English batsman has scored 406 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 168.46. In particular, in the game against RR, Butler broke fifty winning a match.

RR's retention strategy left him with only Rs 41 crore for reconstruction of his squad after spending Rs 79 crore on six players: Samson, Yashsvi Jaiswal, Ryan Parag, Dhruv Jurlel, Shimron Hetmyer, and Sandeep Sharma. The all-Indian batting core failed to deliver under pressure, especially in Samson's absence, while the order between Jurel and Hetmyer, a joint INR was maintained in 25 crores, failed to finish the game. Meanwhile, Samson had earlier admitted that it was personally difficult to let Butler go.

RR Captain Samson told Jio Hotstar, “Let him go has been one of the most challenging decisions for me. During the England series, I told him on dinner that I was still not on it. If I could change one thing in the IPL, I would change the rules of releasing players every three years.”
