India brutally defeated England in the first T20 match at Eden Gardens. Abhishek SharmaBy playing an inning of 79 runs in just 34 balls, the small target of 133 runs was achieved with 43 balls remaining.
Abhishek’s third fifty-plus score in this format was the result of a brilliant all-round performance by the hosts. a combination of Arshdeep Singh2 more wickets for 17 runs at the top Varun Chakraborty3 for 23 in the middle left the tourists all out for 132, thwarting their efforts to mark Brendon McCullum’s aggressive style in his first match in charge.
but for jos buttler68 runs – His 26th T20 half-century – Things could have been worse. The 34-year-old’s evening started by losing a crucial toss to Suryakumar Yadav. With the start time at 7 pm in Kolkata, there was humidity in the air, and dew was a factor right from the start of the first innings. Both the captains wanted to bowl and only one got the chance.
Arshdeep made the best of those early conditions, dismissing openers Phil Salt and Ben Duckett in his first 11 balls. Those dismissals took the left-arm seamer 97 in T20IHe became India’s top wicket-taker in this format by surpassing Yuzvendra Chahal.

By the time Buttler was out in the 17th over, he had 68 out of 109 on the board, with Harry Brook being the only batsman to reach double figures, before Jofra Archer scored 12 from number 9.

Brook’s 17 runs were part of a 48-run stand with Buttler, the vice-captain and skipper Varun preparing to rebuild with googlies. The 33-year-old turned it back into rubble by bowling out Brook and Liam Livingstone in the space of three balls. His third Buttler was out at deep square leg.

Whatever little threat there was in the chase was limited to only the fifth over, when Archer dismissed both. Sanju Samson – who had scored the initial runs – and Suryakumar were out for a duck in four balls. Archer, who opened the innings and bowled his four overs with bounce, led the England bowlers with figures of 2 for 21.

Due to this the responsibility fell on Abhishek, he was dismissed by Adil Rashid for 29 runs out of 16. The left-handed batsman completed his half-century after just four balls.

Although Rashid eventually got his man, India took a 1-0 lead in this five-match series. An excellent four by Tilak Verma on the bouncer of Mark Wood on the last ball of the 13th over confirmed this.
