England Under-19 91 for 5 (Mayes 51) defeated South Africa Under-19 87 (Minto 3-15) by five wickets
An impressive bowling performance from England Men’s U19 paved the way for a comfortable five-wicket win over South Africa Men’s U19 in the opening Youth ODI in Cape Town.
After the hosts batted first and reached 33 for six, Moore and Minto immediately got to work.
The mood was set for an impressive performance from the Lions in the field when Joe Moores took a sharp catch at backward point after Adnan Lagadian arrowed a backfoot drive off Moores, the Derbyshire right-hander.
Durham’s left-handed batsman Minto had already had opener Shailene Pillay caught by wicketkeeper Thomas Reeve for the innings’ best score of three wickets for 15 runs.
Spinners Taj Ali and Farhan Ali ensured wickets kept falling before Worcestershire’s Jack Home – one of three debutants along with Vaughan and Aryan Sawant – ended the innings.
Home first had Anathi Kishini caught by Moores at backward point and then ran out Nqobani Mokoena with a direct hit at the non-striker’s end.
After this, Mayes and Vaughan made sure that Young Lions did not suffer any setback by making a partnership of 64 runs for the second wicket. Mayes played a key role, bringing up his half-century off 45 balls and despite a few late wickets the tourists were always on course for a comfortable win.
The Lions can secure a three-match Youth ODI series on Sunday when the second match is also played at Western Province CC in Cape Town.
