Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has claimed that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have taken the right decision to part ways with long-term coach Stephen Fleming after a disappointing performance in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
Having spent 18 seasons in the dugout, CSK and Fleming have gone their separate ways after a hugely successful stint. The former New Zealand captain led the franchise to five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 titles, making it one of the most successful T20 teams in the world.
Despite past success, Ashwin feels it is the right time for the Chennai-based franchise to move on from Fleming and look towards the future. The former spinner believes that MS Dhoni would be an ideal replacement for the Kiwis if the former captain is ready to take over the reins.
“Fleming really understood what happened [MS] Dhoni and Dhoni understood that Fleming was a great lieutenant and this partnership lasted for so long. I would say now is the time for Chennai Super Kings to look ahead. If Dhoni is ready to do this [take over as coach]There is no better person than this whom Chennai Super Kings can go after. If not, they need to find someone who can work independently and take accountability for his actions,” Ashwin said on Cricinfo.
Ashwin also pointed out that the enormity of the task facing Fleming's replacement is not only overshadowed by the New Zealander's legacy, but also belies the respect Dhoni receives from other members of the team.
“I think there is a bit of uncertainty for anyone going into that dressing room. Mahendra Singh Dhoni is a big name and he is still part of the discussion when you are talking about the team you pick to play. And there will also be someone who will sit as a big brother or mentor to the team which he has been accustomed to for so many years. That is very delicate for someone who will go into the dressing room and someone who will take over the reins from Stephen. Will handle Fleming, because they don't understand what Fleming has given to that franchise, so he has to ease into that role, which can be very, very difficult,” Ashwin said.
As things stand, Dhoni is part of it Chennai Super Kings team, although he did not play a game in the 2026 season due to a calf injury. With the former India wicketkeeper turning 45 earlier this month, it is safe to assume that his playing days are numbered and he may be turning his attention towards the vacant coaching role.
Since winning their fifth title in 2023, CSK have spent three seasons without qualifying for the playoffs. Last season, they finished eighth in the standings after finishing 2025 at the bottom of the standings.
