Mumbai Indians (MI) are set to hold an important season review meeting in England next week, in which key decisions related to the future of the franchise are expected to be discussed. The five-time IPL champions will evaluate several aspects of their disappointing IPL 2026 campaign, including captaincy, coaching and possible player trades.
The meeting is expected to be attended by the franchise's ownership and senior management, who will assess the head coach Mahela JayawardenePost-season report before setting the roadmap for the 2027 season.
Jayawardene's position as head coach could come under scrutiny after another disappointing season for MI, reports The Times of India. The former Sri Lanka captain returned to the coaching setup ahead of IPL 2025, where the franchise finished fourth before slipping to ninth in the 2026 edition.
While dressing room unrest and speculation over Hardik Pandya's future have been in the headlines in recent weeks, reports suggest that the coaching setup will also be reviewed as MI look to rebuild and get back into the title race.
Hardik Pandya's future remains one of the biggest discussion points ahead of the review meeting. While several franchises are believed to have shown interest in acquiring the all-rounder, the Mumbai Indians management is expected to take a final decision after assessing the team's plans.
The report further adds that the trade discussions are unlikely to revolve around Hardik alone, as another former India captain has also reportedly attracted the interest of multiple franchises. However, the identity of the player has not been revealed.
Bumrah and Tilak Verma among the captaincy options
Captaincy is also expected to be a major point of discussion, with Mumbai Indians likely to re-evaluate their leadership plans for the upcoming season.
Jasprit Bumrah Having been consistently available for the franchise for the last three seasons, he has emerged as a strong contender for the role. The fast bowler also captained MI during the IPL 2026 clash against Punjab Kings in the absence of Hardik Pandya and stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav.
Speaking at the toss before that match, Bumrah had indicated his desire to lead the franchise.
He had said at the time of the toss, “Before becoming the captain of MI, I had not thought that I would become the Test captain.”
Young batsman Tilak Verma is also reportedly being considered as a long-term leadership option. With Mumbai Indians trying to bounce back after consecutive disappointing campaigns, the decisions taken during next week's review meeting could shape the future of the franchise ahead of IPL 2027.
