former batsman Hanuma Vihari Team India has been criticized after the 4-0 series defeat by England earlier this month. The defeat meant that the Three Lions overtook the visitors and now move to the top spot in the ICC T20I rankings.
The Indian batsmen looked unable to understand foreign conditions in both Ireland and England, resulting in them losing six of the seven matches played on the tour. The one match they did not lose was rained out at Chester-le-Street.
Vihari said that the performances on show during the Indian Premier League should be taken seriously due to favorable batting conditions. The former Test player also said that experienced batsmen like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli would not have made the same mistakes which led to India's defeat against England.
The value of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli is clearly visible. Would he have got out like this on short balls? Don't be fooled by IPL. In IPL, the grounds are small, flat wickets, the rule of the impact player, everything. When you play any series away, yes, we can't talk about just one series, but they lost six out of seven games, which is worrying. Hanuma Vihari said on his YouTube channel, definitely, this is an alarm bell.
Vihari also raised questions on team selection during the T20 series against England. Initially he did not agree with the selection of Shreyas Iyer as captain, especially after his poor performance in the IPL for Punjab Kings. He was also questioning whether most of the selection was done by the captain or coach Gautam Gambhir.
“If the team management and selectors still don't realise, it will be too late. Shreyas Iyer has lost 12 matches in the last 14 matches as T20 captain. He returned to the team after two and a half years and was made captain. Was he given the team he asked for? Or did Gautam Gambhir give the team, or did they take the decision together? If a captain is leading the team, I think at least 70-80% The power should be his. If the desired result does not come then you can question it,” he said.
India Now he will have to leave his T20I disappointment behind and focus on the ODI series against England. The three-match series begins on Tuesday, July 14.
