Stephen FlemingThe long-time head coach of Chennai Super Kings has parted ways with the franchise and will no longer be a part of their set-up. Fleming joined CSK as a player in the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League in 2008 and moved into the coaching job the following season, a relationship that has continued ever since.
CSK made the official announcement through a media release on Monday, July 13, stating that the two were engaged in honest talks about the five-time champions' future in the IPL ahead of the 2027 season. CSK has not yet announced Fleming's replacement and it is expected to be announced soon.
“Eighteen years in the game is a lifetime, and I am leaving with nothing but gratitude. My time with Chennai Super Kings has been the privilege of my coaching career. I am proud of everything we have achieved. Together, we have celebrated unforgettable wins, overcome difficult moments and created memories that will stay with me forever.
“CSK will always be close to my heart and I will continue to cheer for the team for years to come,” Fleming said in a franchise statement.
What is Stephen Fleming's record as CSK head coach?
Fleming's tenure as head coach with the Chennai-based franchise began in 2009 and it did not take long for him to find success. He led the team to its first title win in 2010 ms dhonicaptained the side, obviously, and repeated it in 2011, making them the first team to win consecutive titles in the cash-rich tournament. He was also on top when CSK won the Champions League T20 title in 2010 and 2014.
For the next few years, the Super Kings cabinet remained the same, but in 2018 they made a spectacular comeback to the marquee league and lifted their third trophy. There was nothing in the next two years, but in 2021 they registered their fourth win by defeating Kolkata Knight Riders in the final and in 2023 won the title for the fifth time to become the joint most successful IPL team with Mumbai Indians.
However, ever since Dhoni stepped down from the full-time captaincy, Fleming and CSK are looking a bit dejected Ruturaj Gaikwad. Many cricket experts have also said that Fleming probably needs to change his approach or CSK will replace him. After all, the franchise has moved on from him, and the future remains unclear for both of them. It will be interesting to see where the two go from here.
