Saikia also said that this would have a huge impact on the availability of foreign players for the entire season, making it challenging for teams to form a stable combination.
“So, there is no discussion at this point of time about increasing it from 74 to 94 matches, which is not happening immediately,” India Today quoted Saikia as saying.
“In later years I don't know what the situation will be, but at the moment I don't see any possibility of increasing it from 74 to 94 because there is not only India to consider but also the interest of players from other ICC cricketing nations, especially Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa and West Indies, who are all playing in this tournament, so we also don't want to disturb other international pictures including their bilateral matches and various other multi-country tournaments.” Added.
As a result, Saikia has suggested that it would be impossible to implement changes from the 2027 season onwards. However, the BCCI certainly plans to do the same with major T20 tournaments in subsequent years.
He concluded, “Therefore, at the moment I see no possibility of extending it beyond the two-month window, which will likely consist of only about 74 matches with plenty of double-headers before the tournament.”
