Sunil Gavaskar told why? Shubman Gill Could not repeat their heroics of IPL 2026 Qualifier 2 during the final against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, May 31.
In Qualifier 2, against Rajasthan Royals, Shubman clean bowled Jofra Archer by hitting two fours in the first two overs of the England seamer inside the power play. The Punjab batsman was seen coming out of his crease and playing shots against Archer during his brilliant innings of 104 runs off 53 balls, which helped Gujarat Titans reach the final.
Gavaskar said that Shubman tried to play in the same style against RCB's Josh Hazlewood in the final, but it had the opposite effect. The former India opener said that Hazlewood used his wrist to give more bounce to the ball. Shubman played the shot half-heartedly and RCB captain Rajat Patidar raced to his right from mid-off to take a good catch. The former player was dismissed after scoring just 10 runs in eight balls as the Titans lost the match by five wickets.
Sunil Gavaskar on GeoHotstar said, “The way Shubhman batted in the last match, he gave 19 runs to Jofra Archer in the first over, there also he was hitting down the pitch. I think he wanted to play the same way against Hazlewood, but when Hazlewood uses his wrist, the ball bounces a little more.”
Gavaskar said that Shubman misjudged the length and went for a pull shot, which was not the right choice. However, the cricketer turned commentator expressed sympathy for the 26-year-old, saying that he got out because of his first mistake in the match.
Gavaskar said, “Many times batsmen feel that the length is short, but it is less than a good length from where it is not easy to play a pull shot. He played the same shot very well against Jofra Archer two days ago. It happens many times that he gets out on his first mistake. Sometimes, you are lucky, the catch is dropped, or the ball falls because the fielders are not close.”
