Bold claim by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) owner Sanjiv Goenka Rishabh Pant It went viral after the wicketkeeper-batsman stepped down as captain of the franchise on Friday, May 29. This comes after LSG's disappointing Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign in 2026, where they finished bottom of the standings with just eight points.
Pant was initially signed by the Lucknow-based franchise for Rs 27 crore in the 2025 mega auction and was immediately made the captain of the team.
In an old video, Goenka was seen pinning high hopes on the left-handed batsman, stating that he can remain the captain of the team for 15 years where he can help LSG win five or six IPL titles. The owner's aim was to compare Pant with Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni, who have won five trophies each under the captaincy of their respective franchises.
However, these claims have backfired after Pant resigned from the captaincy.
The old video clip of Goenka talking highly about Rishabh Pant can be seen below:
Not only did LSG struggle under Pant, but the Indian wicketkeeper also had a poor performance with the bat. The 28-year-old scored 312 runs at an average of 28.36 while striking at 138.05. He scored only one half-century throughout the season and did not bat at a specified number, which would have given him some stability.
It is noteworthy that LSG has now gone three seasons without qualifying for the playoffs. They last finished in the top four in 2023 and finished seventh twice before finishing in 10th place in the 2026 season.
LSG is now looking for a new captain for 2027. One option from their ranks is Mitchell Marsh, who captains Australia in T20Is and also steps up to lead in One Day Internationals in the absence of Pat Cummins.
