“During the training camp before Christmas I found out I was going to be the captain and it was a very special moment,” said Vaughan, a top-order batsman and offspinner. “To have the opportunity to represent England at this level is really special in itself, but to lead the team is something else.”
Overall, he played four first-class and seven 50-over matches for Somerset in the Championship, averaging 33.71 with the bat. He also impressed at age-group level, scoring 85 off 83 balls for the Young Lions Invitational XI in a warm-up match against the England Under-19 ODI team, for whom Andrew Flintoff’s son Rocky Flintoff top-scored with 106. . ,
“If someone had told me 12 months ago that I would have forced my way into the Somerset first team and captained the Under-19s, I wouldn’t have believed them,” Vaughan said. “It happened very quickly but I will keep my feet on the ground and work hard.”
Vaughan’s father became one of England’s most successful captains of all time, with 26 wins in 51 Test matches between 2003 and 2008, including the 2005 Ashes victory.
