Kolkata Knight Riders have been given the green signal to develop a star mystery spinner. Varun Chakraborty Play in IPL despite battling injury.
Varun reportedly suffered a hairline fracture in his leg, despite which he played for Knight Riders against Gujarat Titans. This has not gone down well with the BCCI, as the spinner is going to be a key feature for the white-ball series in Ireland and England. He was seen staggering on the field between his overs.
According to an NDTV report, a senior BCCI official said, “I am aware that the KKR physio is in touch with the Team India physio (Kamlesh Jain). BCCI has received information from KKR that Varun suffered an injury to his left leg while making a boundary save in the last match. It is understood that he has suffered a hairline fracture. I believe that as a BCCI centrally contracted player, his fitness is of paramount importance and the BCCI The medical team can intervene. Jain can be asked what was the input from the KKR medical team.”
The official further questioned why the spinner was bowling willingly even though he knew he was injured. He was rested against Royal Challengers Bangalore on 13 May. He raised questions about the lapses committed by the franchises and asked how the BCCI would be able to function in similar circumstances.
The official questioned, “If Varun was rested in the last game against RCB due to a leg injury, it is important to know how he could not play for that game (on May 13) after a four-day break (vs DC on May 8) but played on Saturday. Yes, KKR's campaign is on the line but can the BCCI allow the franchise to have such indiscretions? A player would want to play despite the pain but is that the right thing to do?”
While Varun could not take a single wicket for 47 runs in his spell, the Knight Riders kept their playoff hopes alive by winning by 29 runs. With two games remaining, they will need to win both to make it to the last four.
