Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Punjab Kings (PBKS) by six wickets at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala on Thursday, May 14.
Shreyas Iyer lost another toss and PBKS were invited to bat first by stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah. Punjab openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh stitched a 50-run partnership inside the power play before the former was dismissed.
Cooper Connolly and Prabhasimran together made a partnership of 57 runs in 35 balls. However, from 107/1 in the 12th over, PBKS inexplicably fell to 140/7. Shardul Thakur was the main bowler, taking four wickets in the middle overs.
Azmatullah Umarzai played a brilliant cameo under pressure and scored 38 runs in 17 balls. After his dismissal, a ninth-wicket partnership between impact players Vishnu Vinod and Xavier Bartlett added 34 runs in just 12 balls to take PBKS to 200/8.
In reply, Ryan Rickelton gave MI a flying start while Rohit struggled to play his naturally attacking game. After a brilliant power play, MI lost the wickets of Rickelton, Naman Dheer and Rohit in quick succession.
Sherfane Rutherford and Tilak Verma Revived the ship with a partnership of 61 runs off 42 balls. The former played second fiddle, while Tilak was at his fluent best. Umarzari gave some hope to Punjab by dismissing Rutherford in the 17th over.
Will Jacques and Tilak added 56 runs in 20 balls to give their team victory with one ball to spare. The latter finished the match unbeaten on 75 runs in 33 balls with the help of two consecutive sixes.
Key moments of the game:
1)Tilak Verma shows his class
Tilak Verma has faced both hot and cold this season. He had only one century in IPL 2026, which came against Gujarat Titans earlier in the tournament. However, on Thursday he showed why he is rated so highly. He formed important partnerships with Will Jacques and Rutherford to lead his team to victory. After going through a bad phase, this innings will make him feel much better.
2) Shardul Thakur wreaked havoc
Shardul Thakur came into the team for this game and made an immediate impact. Despite losing the wicket of Priyansh Arya in the last over of the power play, PBKS were on track to post a big score in the first innings. The experienced all-rounder gave away 15 runs in his first over, which was inside the power play. However, he made a commendable comeback, taking four important wickets and conceding just 24 runs in his last three overs.
3) Azmatullah Omarzai's all-round efforts went in vain
Azmatullah Umarzai played his first match in IPL 2026. The Afghanistan all-rounder came to bat when PBKS lost half their team in the 14th over. Even after losing the wicket from the other end, Umarzai counter-attacked. His innings of 38 runs on 17 balls helped PBKS reach 200. With the ball, he took the wickets of Rickelton and Rutherford.
