Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) Defeated Punjab Kings (PBKS) by a comfortable margin of 33 runs in Match No. 49 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Wednesday, 06 May.
After being invited to bat first, Sunrisers started with a bang, in which the star opening pair of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma thrashed the Punjab bowlers. Before Abhishek scored 35 runs in 13 balls, they made a partnership of 54 runs in just 21 balls. Soon after, Head was out after scoring 38 runs in 19 balls. Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen were given life by dropped catches, and they made sure to make the Kings pay by scoring 55 off 32 balls and 69 off 43 balls respectively as the home side posted a mammoth 235/4 in their 20 overs.
The visitors suffered a blow with the early dismissals of openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh with only seven balls remaining in the innings. They finished the powerplay at 57/3 and also lost captain Shreyas Iyer in the same amount of time. Due to the weakness of Sunrisers bowlers, they kept losing wickets continuously. The Kings ended their innings at 202/7, with Cooper Connolly scoring his maiden T20 century and remaining unbeaten on 107 off 59 balls.

Not one, not two but three catches were dropped punjab kings in this game. Ishan Kishan was dismissed twice by Cooper Connolly and Lockie Ferguson for 9 and 18, and Shashank Singh dismissed Heinrich Klaasen for 9. Both the batsmen took their lives and made Punjab Kings pay with a partnership of 88 runs in 48 balls, which was the backbone of Sunrisers' innings. The Kings will regret their missed chances as Sunrisers posted a massive score of 235/4 in 20 overs.
2. Sunrisers bowlers lived up to the occasion
Before the start of the season, Sunrisers looked to be one of the weaker bowling teams. Now, they stand as the best bowling side in the tournament, which is a major aspect of their seven wins in the tournament. The return of Pat Cummins has been a huge boost as he has added international experience to the attack. Ishan Malinga has been a strike bowler, supported by death over specialist Saqib Hussain and resurgent Nitish Kumar Reddy. Cummins and Reddy troubled the opposition early by dismissing the openers cheaply, before Shreyas Iyer fell victim to Malinga. These three early wickets helped break the back of the Kings' innings.

Punjab Kings started the season unbeaten in seven matches, but now they have faced defeat in three consecutive matches. They have failed with the bat in the last two matches and have been bowled out by Rajasthan Royals in all four innings. They will need to regroup after this game to ensure they get back to winning ways.

(On the mid-campaign slowdown) I think we've got a fairy-tale start. Everyone was in great shape, the mentality was top notch. It is easy to get distracted. It will not help if we continue in the same form. But we have to go back and think what we did not do well in the last three matches. We have to come back stronger.
(On Cooper Connolly) He's phenomenal. His mentality is top notch. You can learn from the character he shows on the field. Also, I think he has the ability to score big in pressure situations, which he has shown before and has shown here as well.
(On Yuzvendra Chahal) The way he bowled, he was fearless. His attitude especially against the leftists was brilliant. I told him to attack. Unfortunately, we didn't take the catch and it was a big blow.”

“[on the pleasing aspect of the match] There are some. Punjab is a really good team. To come in at No. 1 and have batsmen reach the level that we did was sensational. The finish, no matter the score. It is always difficult to bowl second against such a team but we were very clinical.
[on success while batting first] We are very good at playing at our pace. Don't try to start conservatively. That's not really Abhi and Travis' style. We are trying to maximize as much as possible. Not really thinking about the total score or anything and then maybe later in the innings if it goes in a different direction, we are very good at making adjustments.
[on home advantage] We have played very good cricket here in the last few years. It suited our style. Even tonight it caught up to some extent, which suited our bowlers quite well in the end and we feel that no matter what happens, this pitch takes us in the middle of the game, we have seen it before and we can adjust.
[on personal performance] Happy with this. Still don't know how I got that award but I feel really good. Came in this fresh. There was very good preparation. I feel great, happy that I can contribute.
[on Arya’s wicket] Not much worked for either team in the powerplay so we tried to be a little more active today. We had plans but we didn't have many other options and unfortunately it came to an end tonight. Try and shift the field, pretend that something more is happening than it really is.
[on rotating bowlers] We have lots of options. With Nitish as an all-rounder I feel we always have 6 or 7 options. I always like to have a somewhat clear mind first about what the powerplay might look like and then keep a fairly open mind to where it might take me.
[on Connolly] Yes. Happy. Good result. Nice to see the Australian team performing well. He has been a star for them this season. Not bowling at the moment but still showing his ability. Good times for us. [on if this is their season] There's still a little bit of time left, so we've actually got a little bit of a break now, so we'll save a little bit of time at the top. “I wouldn't want to be this happy anywhere else but No. 1.”
