Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) head coach justin langer After another high-scoring encounter, fans expressed surprise at the changing batting standards in the Indian Premier League 2026 season. His comments came after Mumbai Indians (MI) chased down a staggering target of 229 runs with an over to spare, underscoring the dramatic shift in what is considered a safe total.
The current season has seen a significant increase in scoring rates, with teams consistently crossing the 200-run mark and chasing down challenging scores with relative ease.
Speaking after the match, Langer admitted that he was surprised by the fearless approach adopted by the modern batsmen.
Langer said in the post-match press conference, “I really, as a former batsman and a former batsman who has loved batting and a coach for a long time, I can't believe the batting I'm seeing at the moment. It's breathtaking. It's absolute.”
“Who would have thought, though, many years ago you would have seen run chasers like we have seen today, or Nicky Pooran or Rickelton coming in – and we are not even talking about young kids. Raghuvanshi went out today in his first IPL game and hit a six. If I had played, it would have made my day, but I would have been so nervous that I would have stopped it,” he added.
Despite the batsman-dominated narrative, Langer was quick to acknowledge the efforts of the bowlers who continued to compete in adverse conditions.
“I thought Prince Yadav today – I think he bowled three overs for 22 runs, and his last over went for 10 runs, I think – so he's a really good bowler, he'll still keep his composure. So, you know, that's what we're looking at,” he added.
The former Australian international also revealed that the changing dynamics of the game have prompted LSG to rethink their strategies, especially their batting order.
“I thought the whole restructuring of our batting order was positive. We identified – last summer or last season – all of our metrics where we were on top of everything with our batting were absolutely at the bottom this year, so we had to do something.”
Langer gave special praise nicholas puranWhose impressive innings gave the required momentum to the team.
He concluded, “To see Nicky Pooran bat like that and bring a smile to everyone's face – you could see how determined he was. And I actually go to every training session to watch Nicky Pooran bat.”
It has been a disappointing season for LSG and they are on the verge of elimination after the defeat to MI. They are currently placed 10th in the points table with just two wins from nine matches.
