A rare and memorable moment unfolded at the MA Chidambaram Stadium when three generations of Indian T20 leadership came together before theIndian Premier League Match between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians in 2026. World Cup-winning captain MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav were seen sharing a light moment during a practice session, the scene quickly went viral among fans.
Each of these players represents a defining era in Indian T20 cricket. Dhoni led India to victory in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 and laid the foundation for the development of the format in the country. Rohit carried forward that legacy and led India to another global title in 2024. Recently, Suryakumar successfully defended the crown in 2026 and made his place among the top leaders of the game.
However, the current IPL season has not been equally good for all three. Suryakumar Yadav, famous for his explosive batting, is struggling to find his rhythm. In eight innings, he has managed only 162 runs at an average of 20.25 and a strike rate of 140.87, which is well below his usual standards. His recent scores of 6, 33, 0, 15, 36 and 5 reflect the lack of consistency that has plagued Mumbai Indians' campaign.
Rohit, on the other hand, had a great start to the season but was ruled out due to a hamstring injury against Royal Challengers Bangalore. He has now missed four consecutive matches, including the recent match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Although he has resumed light training, MI captain Hardik Pandya confirmed that Rohit needs more time to recover, adding to the uncertainty over his return.
Meanwhile, Dhoni has not been seen so far this season due to a calf injury. Despite hopes of a comeback, especially in Chennai, he has been out of the playing eleven. The CSK management appears to be cautious, prioritizing team balance and his complete recovery.
In terms of standings, CSK are at the seventh position with six points and a net run rate of -0.121, while MI are struggling at the ninth position with four points and a net run rate of -0.784.
