Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra Concern has been raised over Rajat Patidar's controversial dismissal during the 42nd match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 between defending champions Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on April 30.
Chasing a modest target, GT achieved an easy win with four wickets in hand and 25 balls to spare. Earlier in the match, RCB were all out for 155, with Patidar contributing 19 runs off 15 balls before falling to a controversial catch by Jason Holder at fine leg off Arshad Khan.
The dismissal sparked debate among fans and experts, with many questioning whether Holder had completed the catch cleanly. Sharing his views, Chopra said that the decision was wrong as per the rules of the game.
Chopra said on his YouTube channel, “In my opinion, it was not a catch. The clear difference in Rule 33.3 is that once the ball is in your hand, you have to have complete control of the ball and your body and till then the ball must not touch the ground. Your hand can touch the ground, but not the ball.”
He explained in detail the nature of the catch and explained that Holder was still in motion when attempting to complete it.
He said, “Jason Holder took the catch and slipped. When you are slipping, your body is still in motion, and it is not completely under control. When he was slipping, the ball had touched the ground, and by then the ball was not over. The catch was not complete. I thought the umpire made a mistake there. It should have been given not out.”
