Punjab Kings head coach ricky ponting Expressed his feelings during the match against Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League 2026. The former Australian captain was clearly frustrated in the dugout as his team struggled on the field, especially with several missed chances.
However, the atmosphere lightened up a bit after the match. As the PBKS players lined up for the customary handshake, captain Shreyas Iyer tried to hide Shashank Singh's face with his cap as Ponting approached, and humorously acknowledged the fielder's difficult outing. What happened next reflected Ponting's leadership style, instead of showing anger, he pretended to slap Shashank before smiling and hugging him, offering reassurance and support.
Singh faced a tough time on the field, missing many chances which proved costly. His first big mistake came when Nicholas Pooran missed a shot, but the catch fell in the deep. The missed opportunity allowed Pooran to move forward, potentially leading to a change in momentum. Shashank later misjudged a shot from Aiden Markram near the boundary, resulting in the ball going for six runs instead of being collected safely. PBKS's troubles worsened when Mukul Chaudhary was given another chance, this time too he was dropped.
PBKS continued their dominance in the IPL and remained unbeaten with an impressive 54-run win over LSG at the Maharaja Yadvendra Singh International Cricket Stadium on 19 April.
The foundation of Punjab's huge score was laid by an extraordinary partnership between Priyansh Arya and Cooper Connolly. These two destroyed the LSG bowling attack by making a brilliant partnership of 182 runs in just 80 balls. Both the batsmen looked ready to score a century, but were left far behind after playing explosive innings, due to which the opposition team was on the back foot in the beginning of the innings.
After his dismissal, Marcus Stoinis and Shashank Singh provided the finishing touches and took the total to 254/7 in 20 overs. In reply, LSG made a positive start with Mitchell Marsh and Ayush Badoni making an opening partnership of 61 runs. However, once the opening stand was broken, the innings lost momentum. Wickets started falling at regular intervals, making it difficult for LSG to maintain the required run rate.
Rishabh Pant and Aiden Markram attempted to stabilize the chase and keep the scoreboard ticking. Although both showed intent, neither could generate the sustained acceleration required to challenge PBKS's grand total. Marco Johnson emerged as the standout performer with the ball for Punjab and bowled disciplined spells.
